Many of these victims end up spending a lot to time and money to clean up the financial mess created by the identity thief. Having your purse or wallet stolen is one of the causes of identity theft. Using the personal information found in your purse or wallet, the thief is able to open credit card or bank account under your identity. Rural areas are hit hard by mail theft due to the low population of people in those areas. If you can, you should have all of your important mail such as bank and credit card statements mailed to a secured locked mailbox such as a post office box.

The internet is becoming a more popular place for identity theft. More identities are being stolen through the internet due to changes and new development with technology. They are using fake website signup pages to steal your personal log in username and password information. Once you log in to the false website, the internet thieves steal your username and password and gain access to your account information. You should beware of any suspicious links that you may receive by email. Always access your bank or credit card accounts by going directly to the website address provided by financial institution.
